Instead of getting dissolved in water and alcohol, it is soluble in hydrochloric acid present in the stomach. But in contrast, it is toxic when ingested. It has the nature to dissolve into hydrogen peroxide, diluted mixture of nitric acid, hydrochloric acid and glacial acetic acid. The formation minium happens only in oxidizing conditions of a lead ore bodies. It is uncommon to get natural minium. Once in Broken Hill , New South Wales , Australia , there occurred a mine fire and as a result minium was formed. Lead Tetroxide melts at 500 °C degree Celsius. At this temperature it decomposes to Lead (II) oxide and oxygen. Chemically, Red lead is known as tetroxide, 2PbO.PbO2 or Pb3O4. Red Lead is used in rust proof paint, batteries and lead glass manufacturing industries. |
